Tohorā (whales) are highly regarded kin or tupuna to Māori and the kaitiaki (guardians) of the realm of Tangaroa, the atua (god) of the ocean. In the Māori world, they are an omen of the supernatural and a sign of abundance because of their many offerings, even in death.
This hiku tohorā was carved by Jeremy Walsh at our workshop in Kirikiriroa from a piece of kawakawa pounamu. The pendant has a matt finish, measures 102mm by 47mm, and is hung on a hand-platted adjustable wax polyester cord.
