Wahaika, meaning the mouth of a fish, were close-combat weapons used to bait and engage an enemy into a duel at their peril. The notched edge of the weapon was then used to disarm the enemy before dispatching with short strikes that kill or maim.
This Wahaika is made from Kawakawa pounamu and was carved by Alex Sands. It measures 31.5 x 8.6 cm and is bound with a hand-plaited wax cord.
