Pūtātara are instruments made from the shell of the triton sea snail. Their oro (sound) was used to herald the arrival of manuhiri (visitors) and foes, summons to formal learning, or in preparation for war.

This pūtātara was hand-carved and crafted by Alex Sands. It measures 30 x 18 x 10 cm.
