Matau-manaia are contemporary forms of wearable taonga, that provide protection to their wearer. The matau-manaia personifies Tangaroa, the guardian over all living creatures in ngā puna wai (water sources)
This taonga was hand-carved by Jeremy Walsh from kawakawa showing raukaraka source from Marsden of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 6cm by 3cm, inlayed with paua eye and set with red sealing wax and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
