Hei matau are fish hooks fashioned in the style of Māui. These are symbols of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. They are also considered to provide good luck and safety on water, therefore thoughtful gifts for travellers. This hei matau incorporates a hiku tohorā (whale tail) and three whakapapa notches.
This taonga was hand-carved by Peter Mitchell. It measures is 48 x 32 x 7 mm.
