Sands Carving Studio

PTO3413S

Whale tails are a symbol of the tohorā (whale). Tohorā are the kaitiaki (guardians) of the realm of Tangaroa (God of the Ocean). In the Māori world, they are an omen of the supernatural and a sign of abundance because of their many offerings, even in death.

This taonga was hand-carved by Peter Mitchell from bone. It measures approximately 48 x 32 x 7 mm.
