Hei tiki represent the form of the first human. When worn, they provide a tangible link to the tūpuna (ancestors) that brought us into this world and guide us forward. Traditionally worn by Māori as ornaments of respect and status, they are a prestigious gift to be handed down as taonga (treasure) through the generations carrying the wisdom and mana of those who wore them previously.
This stunning hei tiki was hand-carved by Andy Ruskin from high quality raukaraka pounamu and features flawless inlaid paua eyes. It measures 11.5 x 6 cm mm and has a hand-braided four-plait cord.
Andy Ruskin, based in Hokitika, originally hails from Nelson and has a background in visual arts and metalsmithing. His work draws inspiration from the region's rugged natural beauty and the cultural heritage of early Maori artists who revered this unique material. With maternal genealogy linked to the Kai Tahu/Kati Mamoe iwi, Ruskin sees his creations as a continuation of a longstanding family tradition.
