Hei matau are fish hooks fashioned in the style of Māui. These are symbols of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. They are also considered to provide good luck and safety on water, and are therefore thoughtful gifts for travellers. This heit matau features a hiku tohorā (whale tail) and three whakapapa notches.
This taonga was hand-carved by Peter Mitchell from bone. It measures approximately 48 x 30 x7mm and comes on an adjustable hand-plaited black cord.
