Kōauau are a form of flute used in traditional healing ceremonies in welcoming new life, and escorting departing spirits. The tangi (sound) of the Kōauau were also known to mimic native manu (birds). The Kōauau's sound was known to imitate native birds and attract people from distant places.

It is carved with unaunahi, which are fish scales that can symbolise safety, protection, and abundance from the sea.

This piece was hand carved by Yuri Terenyi and  measure 14.5 x 2 and 15.5 x 2 cm.
