The oro (song) of the Pūrerehua is designed to imitate the whirling and fluttering of the native Pūriri moth. the Pūrerehua is an instrument for communicating with those from this realm and the one beyond.
Maori uses varied from luring lizards, summoning rain and attracting a soul mate. In another tradition, several are played in unison at Tangis (funerals).
This piece was hand carved by Alex Sands and measures 125 x 40mm.
