Hei tiki represent the form of the first human, worn by Māori they are a prestigious gift. Hei tiki are a remembrance of Tupuna (ancestors) that guide us forward. Hei tiki can be seen as ornaments of honor and status. It is hung by an adjustable hand-plaited black cord.
This exquisitely hand-tooled Hei Tiki was carved by Layton Robertson and measures approximately 70 x 45 mm. It is bound with a 24 cm hand-made, authentic muka cord at a fixed length which features an albatross bone toggle.
Crafted in the traditional Māori fashion, this piece involved working with Hoanga (sandstone), Onepū (sand), Manaia chert, Tutu, and concluding with Kokowai. The entire process spanned around 130 hours.
