Purerehua, also known as "Bull-roarer" are made of bone, wood or stone. They are blade-like and swing on a long cord producing a loud, deep whirring sound that can be heard from a distance.
Maori uses varied from luring lizards, summoning rain and attracting a soul mate. In another tradition, several are played in unison at Tangis (funerals).
It measures 27 x 5 x 7cm. The handle and instrument are connected with a muka (tan) coloured wax cord.
