Wahaika, meaning the fish mouth, were close-combat weapons used to bait and engage an enmy into a duel at their peril. The notched edge of the weapon was then used to disarm the enemy before dispatching the short strikes that kill or maim.
This piece was carved by Alex Sands and measures 35 x 10 cm and features manaia with inlaid paua shell eyes.
