Hei tiki represent the form of the first human. When worn, they are a remembrance and a connection to the tupuna (ancestors) that brought us into this world and guide us forward. Traditionally worn by Māori as ornaments of honor and status, they are a prestigious gift to be handed down from parent to child through the generations.
The intricately carved limbs and face are representative of ta moko, elevating the status of this taonga, with the raukaraka Marsden flower jade giving the piece plenty of character. The eyes are inlaid with pāua shell and sealed with red wax and has a semi-gloss finish.
This hei tiki was carved by Yuki Tanaka in our studio in Kirikiriroa from pounamu sourced from the west coast of the South Island. It measures 135mm by 65mm and is bound with an adjustable, hand-platted cord.
