Whakaruruhau are breastplates or shield adornments that represent strength and leadership. They are a taonga of personal protection that share their beauty with the Te Ao Turoa (outer world).
The Pekapeka is a double headed Manaia. It has been suggested that the Pekapeka represents the native bat However, it is also seen to represent two intertwined bird forms.
Pekapeka are believed to symbolise spiritual protection and guardianship.
This piece is notched, with red wax eyes on one side and paua inlay eyes on the other side.
The shield taonga measures: 99 x 62 x 6mm
