Pūtātara are instruments made from the shell of the triton sea snail. Their oro (sound) was used to herald the arrival of manuhiri (visitors) and foes, summons to formal learning, or in preparation for war.
This pūtātara features a totara mouthpiece carved in the form of a koruru, engraved with unaunahi, inlaid with paua shell eyes. It is adorned with weka feathers and bound with a handmade three-plait cord.
It was hand-carved and crafted by Alex Sands. It measures 30 x 18 x 10 cm.
