Traditional Maori heru are combs worn as functional hair ornaments by both men and women. Often the decorations on pre-European heru were a symbol of mana and prestige.
This heru has been carved from whale bone by Alex Sands and features an inlaid pāua eye and beautifully carved kōwhaiwhai patterns.
The heru measures approximately 17.1 x 3.5 cm.
