In the prized bodies of nautical and cosmological knowledge resides the art of the navigator. The treasures and vital sustenance of Tangaroa, god of the ocean, required our tupuna (ancestors) to be expert mariners. The lines and curves of the matau (fishhook) symbolise abundance and safe travel through life’s journeys.
The inspiration behind this hei matau comes from the mangōpare, or the hammerhead shark. Known for its strength and resilience, mangōpare carry the qualities of a leader. When combined with the prosperity and protection of the hei matau form, this pendant is the perfect gift for those in a position of responsibility.
This pendant was carved by Jeremy Walsh from an exquisite piece of raukaraka Marsden flower jade, showcasing the spectrum of colour that raukaraka is known for. It measures 100mm by 90mm and is bound with an adjustable, hand-platted cord.
