Whale tails are a symbol of the Tohorā (whale). Tohorā are the kaitiaki (guardians) of the realm of Tangaroa (God of the Ocean). In the Maori world, they are an omen of the supernatural and a sign of abundance because of their many offerings, even in death.
The size of this piece measures approximately 48 x 32 x 7 mm and was hand-carved by Peter Mitchell.
