From the discovery of Aotearoa by the original whale rider Paikea, tohorā (whales) have been highly regarded kin or tūpuna to Māori and are the kaitiaki (guardians) of the realm of Tangaroa, the atua (spirit) of the ocean. In the Māori world, they are an omen of the supernatural and a sign of abundance because of their many offerings, even in death.

This hiku tohorā was carved by Jeremy Walsh from kōkopu pounamu sourced from Arahura Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 68mm by 40mm, has a matt finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided polyester cord.
