The roimata embodies our emotions in times of joy, sadness, celebration and tribulation. Traditionally made from pounamu adzes or similar tools that were too worn down to be functional, they were gifted as a way of remembering the history and tūpuna (ancestors). They remind us of our humanity, and our ability to overcome adversity even when the path is spiritually difficult.
This roimata was carved by Jeremy Walsh from kawakawa pounamu sourced from Rimu in Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 90mm by 16mm, has a glossy finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
