Sands Carving Studio

PKO3455S

In the ancient Māori world, the toki or adze was a vital tool in everyday life. Toki have come to represent the strength and skill of an individual, and the acquisition of knowledge and mana (prestige).

Kōkopu comes from the Arahura River on the West Coast between Greymouth and Hokitika. The spots on the stone resemble the patterns on the kokopu (native speckled trout).

This taonga was hand-carved by Sam Potter from kōkopu pounamu. It measures 87 x 20 mm and has a tan adjustable hand-plaited cord.
