Hiku Tohorā Raukaraka - Greenstone Whale Tail Pendant

Sands Carving Studio

Tohorā (whales) are highly regarded kin or tūpuna to Māori and the kaitiaki (guardians) of the realm of Tangaroa, the atua of the ocean. In the Māori world, they are an omen of the supernatural and a sign of abundance because of their many offerings, even in death.

This hiku tohorā was carved by Yuki Tanaka from raukaraka pounamu source from Marsden of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. The pendant has a semi-gloss finish engraved with unaunahi, measures 100mm by 40mm, and is hung on a hand-plaited adjustable cord.
