Wahaika were commonly used prior to European settlement and made from either parāoa (whale bone) or wood. Wahaika means mouth of a fish, because of its general shape.

Black maire wood, native to Aotearoa, grows sparsely from North Cape to Kaikoura. Known for its durability, it was used by Māori for implements and weapons.

This taonga measures 33.5 x 10 cm and sits on a native timber and brass base. It was hand-carved by Alex Sands.
