Traditional Māori heru are combs worn as functional hair ornaments by both men and women. The decorations on pre-European heru were often a symbol of mana and prestige.

This taonga measures 142 x 37 mm and was carved from black maire, a native tree of Aotearoa New Zealand.

This taonga was hand-carved by Alex Sands.
