Matau-manaia are contemporary forms of wearable taonga, that provide protection to their wearer. The matau-manaia personifies Tangaroa, the guardian over all living creatures in ngā puna wai (water sources)
This taonga was hand-carved by Jeremy Walsh from raukaraka pounamu, sourced from Marsden of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 110mm by 60mm, inlaid with red wax paua eye and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
