Mere pounamu were highly-prized taonga (heirlooms) handed down from one  generation to the next. To possess a mere siginified the status and mana (authority) of those who would weild it. Historically, mere were often used in ceremonies or on occasion as a gift to settle grievances.

This piece was hand-carved by Alex Sands and measures 380 x 95mm.
