The name pekapeka comes from the native bat of Aotearoa. With eyes in both the physical and spiritual realms, the pekapeka is a formidable kaitiaki (protector). Worn on special occasions, it is carved as twin outward facing manaia (guardians) connected by a single body. It is said that Māui-tikitiki-a-Taranga, the great trickster, would take on the form of the pekapeka.
This sculptural pekapeka was carved by Jeremy Walsh from kahurangi pounamu sourced from Marsden of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa, with red wax eyes engraved with unaunahi. It measures 95mm by 110mm, has a semi-gloss finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
