Pātiti are the outcome of European trade and Māori ingenuity. Originally post-colonial tools traded to Māori, pātiti are hatchets with the heads made from the repurposed European iron of axes or harpoons. Typically, the tools were ground down to make them substantially lighter and then attached to native wooden handles to make effective weapons.

This pātiti was crafted by Alex Sands from an antique iron axe head with the handle carved from sperm whale bone. The pātiti measures 372mm by 124mm on its own, and 396mm by 265mm on the wooden base. The handle has a semi-gloss finish, and is bound with a hand-braided cord.
