Hei matau are fish hooks fashioned in the style of Māui. These are symbols of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. They are also considered to provide good luck and safety on water, and are therefore thoughtful gifts for travellers.
This piece was hand-carved by Yuki Tanaka from totoweka pounamu. (Totoweka means blood of the weka, in reference to the speck of red that appear in this form of pounamu). It measures: 120 x 64 x 4mm.
