Pūtātara are instruments made from the shell of the triton sea snail. Their oro (sound) was used to herald the arrival of manuhiri (visitors) and foes, summons to formal learning, or in preparation for war.
This pūtātara features a ta whale tooth mouthpiece carved with a wheku design, engraved with unaunahi, inlaid with paua shell eyes. It is adorned with weka feathers and bound with a handmade three-plait cord.
It was hand-carved by Alex Sands and measures 38cm x 14cm.
