    Hei matau are fish hooks fashioned in the style of Māui. These are symbols of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. They are also considered to provide good luck and safety on water, and are therefore thoughtful gifts for travellers. It features a stylised hiku tohorā as the barb of the hook.

    This taonga was hand-carved by Alex Sands from parāoa (whale bone). It measures: 60 x 25 x 6mm and has a black adjustable hand-plaited cord.
