Manaia Matau Kawakawa - Greenstone Gaurdian Fishhook Pendant

Sands Carving Studio

Manaia, a powerful personal guardian in Māori tradition, embodies mana – the concept of power, authority, and prestige. Believed to possess ethereal presence and energy, the manaia protects its wearer and maintains spiritual balance. In Māori cosmology, the manaia is often depicted as a kaitiaki (protector) and messenger between the earthly and spiritual worlds.

The treasures and vital sustenance of Tangaroa, kaitiaki (protector) of the ocean, required our tūpuna (ancestors) to be expert mariners. The lines and curves not only represent abundance and prosperity but also safe passage across life's journeys, echoing the voyages undertaken by those who first explored and settled the vast Pacific.

This manaia hei matau was carved by Jeremy Walsh from kawakawa pounamu sourced from Big Bay of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 65mm by 50mm, has a glossy finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided polyester cord.
