Hei matau are fish hooks fashioned in the style of Māui. These are symbols of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. They are also considered to provide good luck and safety on water, and are therefore thoughtful gifts for travelers.
This piece was hand carved by Jeremy Walsh from locally-sourced onewa (basalt). It measures 65 x 37 x 9mm and has a tan hand-plaited adjustable cord.
