Aotea Rei Niho - Whale Tooth Pendant

Sands Carving Studio

PAO3769S

Rei puta are chiefly taonga traditionally carved from the teeth of Tohorā (whale). Rei niho carved from pounamu maintains the beauty of the traditional form, symbolising the intimate connection between Maori and Tohorā.

This Rei Niho is carved from Aotea stone, a rare stone found only in one area of South  Westland, NZ.  Also known as Hine, the stone is a blend of kyanite(blue), fushsite(green) and Quartz (white) and can often have a glittery appearance.

This Rei Niho has a predominantly green and white colouring with a glittery appearance.  It is hung by an adjustable hand platted cord and hand carved by Jeremy Walsh

This piece measures: 62 x 26 x 9mm.
