Traditional Maori Heru are combs worn as functional hair ornaments by both men and women.  Often the decorations on pre-European heru were a symbol of mana and prestige.

These Heru are unique and differ from most as they are hand-crafted by one of the countries best stone tool and pre-European Māori style artists, Layton Robertson. Expert tāniko weaves are done by hand into a 3 meter cord and intricately woven between each stick (without the use of any machine tools) to create the beautiful pattern you see here.

This Whalebone Heru measures 13.5 x 6.3 cm and was carved by Layton Robertson.
